Davey partners to create the Shigo Collection, an online arboretum

The Davey Tree Co. has partnered with the Southern Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service to help catalog a collection of images of 3D wood samples collected by Dr. Alex L. Shigo to build an online resource for those who study arboriculture.

Dr. Shigo was considered the “father of modern arboriculture.” His theory about the “compartmentalization of decay in trees,” or CODIT, lead to many changes and adaptations in the tree care industry. Some of the wood samples in his collection were the result of intentionally “wounding” trees and then collecting samples to show how trees respond to different types of wounds.

In addition to the images, more than 50 of his publications and research papers have been posted on topics including wood decay, trees and humans, stress and death of trees, how branches are attached to trunks, and more.
