600-year-old oak tree to be removed in Basking Ridge, New Jersey
A massive oak tree, more than twice as old as the United States of America, will be taken down in Basking Ridge, NJ, starting in early 2017. The tree is iconic in the small New Jersey town, but the growth of the community around the tree has halted its ability to sustain itself.
The removal of the tree is estimated at about $40,000, but hundreds of dollars have already been raised by the community to help mitigate this cost. The community church built directly under the tree has told the community that all the wood will be saved, and requests and suggestions for the use of the wood have been pouring in from all over the world, from locations as far as Ireland and India.
In a community where even the police officer’s uniforms bear reference to this epochal tree, the ideas for the repurposing of its wood come as a welcome reminder to the longevity and identity of the Basking Ridge community.
